What is magnetorheological suspension - 1

In the pursuit of horsepower, autonomous driving and fast-charging batteries, one of the biggest technological revolutions in the modern automotive industry remains almost unnoticed by the general public. It is not visible on digital dashboards and does not make noise in advertisements. It is about the transformation of automotive suspension through a combination of intelligent fluids and computer vision.

For decades, engineers have sought a compromise between two fundamentally opposite characteristics: a stiff suspension for sporty behavior in corners and a soft one for maximum comfort on a long journey. Today, this compromise is no longer possible thanks to magnetorheological shock absorbers and new-generation adaptive hydraulic systems, colloquially known as magnetic-adaptive suspension.

Chemistry and magnetism under the body

The basis of this technology is a special working fluid saturated with microscopic metal particles. In its normal state, the fluid behaves like standard hydraulic oil. However, when the computer sends an electrical impulse to the electromagnets inside the shock absorber, the particles instantly arrange themselves in chains.

The result is a lightning-fast solidification of the fluid - the process takes less than 10 milliseconds. This allows the suspension to change its characteristics hundreds of times per second. When entering a sharp bend, the car instantly tightens the outer shock absorbers to prevent the body from tilting, and the next moment over the pavement it softens the ride to the level of a limousine.

Cameras that see the terrain in advance

However, the real breakthrough comes from the joint work of these shock absorbers with the stereoscopic cameras and LiDAR sensors in the front of the car. The system scans the road surface dozens of meters in front of the car, building a three-dimensional profile of the surface.

If there is a pothole or a police officer lying down in front of the front right wheel, the on-board computer calculates the exact time of contact. The second the tire steps on the obstacle, the suspension instantly compresses the shock absorber, absorbing the unevenness without it being transmitted to the passenger compartment at all. The body remains absolutely horizontal, and passengers practically do not feel the impact.

Why is this technology key today?

The mass introduction of new platforms - especially in heavy electric and hybrid cars - has made classic springs and shock absorbers difficult to apply. Batteries and additional electric motors increase the mass of vehicles by several hundred kilograms. Without innovative solutions for body control, these cars would ride too hard or would be unstable during sudden maneuvers.

The implementation of adaptive hydraulic and magnetorheological systems allows even five-meter sedans and heavy SUV models to be driven with the ease of compact sports cars, while maintaining ideal comfort. The car no longer just reacts to the road - it anticipates it.
