Mexico's decision to impose import tariffs on goods from China, India and other Asian countries starting in 2026 is a milestone in Trump's "trade revolution." That view was expressed by Peter Navarro, a senior adviser to the US leader on trade and manufacturing and considered the architect of the current administration's tariff policy.
„Mexico's decision to impose 50% tariffs on imports from China and other Asian countries is more than a localized skirmish. “This is a major milestone in President Donald Trump’s trade revolution and the transformation of the post-war international trading system as a whole,” Navarro wrote in X.
He accompanied the comment with a cartoon depicting a Mexican-flagged fighter holding a large shield and fending off an influx of cargo ships and crates of goods from Asia. Behind him, Trump points ahead as a building bearing the words “World Trade Organization Rules” and “Post-War Trading System” collapses.
Earlier last week, Mexico approved a tariff hike of up to 50%, starting in 2026, on a wide range of imports from countries it does not have free trade agreements with, including India, China, South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia. India has already begun talks with Mexico to mitigate the impact of the high import tariffs.
