Zhelyazkov: Bulgarian Euro coins will be legal tender from January 1 and will bear national symbols - 1

“Bulgarian Euro coins will be legal tender throughout Europe and will bear Bulgarian national symbols. In this way, our country will be part of the European cultural and monetary heritage“. This was stated by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, who, together with the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Dimitar Radev, got acquainted on site with the production process of Bulgarian Euro coins at the BNB Mint.

Prime Minister Zhelyazkov noted that all Euro coins have the same obverse side for the whole of Europe, and on the other - national symbols characteristic of each member state of the Eurozone. The Bulgarian series of Euro coins includes established national symbols, personalities and objects from the national history and cultural heritage of the country. The 2 euro coin depicts Paisius of Hilendar - a Bulgarian monk, clergyman and educator, author of the Renaissance work "Slavonic-Bulgarian History". To the right of the image is written in Cyrillic "BULGARIA", and to the left are the inscription "EURO" and the year of issue "2025". The inscription on the edge of the coin on one half is "GOD PROTECT BULGARIA", and on the other - the same inscription is written in reverse.

The 1 euro coin depicts the image of Saint Ivan of Rila - a spiritual leader, hermit and miracle worker, considered the heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people. The coins with denominations of 50, 20, 10, 5 and 2 cents bear the image of the Madara Horseman - a rock relief from the 8th century, included in the World Cultural Heritage List.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and the Governor of the BNB made sure on site that the bank's Mint is operating at an extremely high level and a 24-hour production process has been introduced. This guarantees the quality of the coins and sufficient quantities. “We are completely ready. With the euro coins minted in our country, it will be possible to pay anywhere in Europe, and with the European ones - in our country. This is an important step towards the successful economic and social development of our country”, the Prime Minister also emphasized.

The Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Dimitar Radev stated that the preparation of the banking sector and the Mint Center for the introduction of the euro is proceeding according to plan. “The coin center is operating at full capacity, sufficient quantities of euro coins have been provided. There will be enough coins – both in the initial package and subsequently. There is no room for concern“, assured Dimitar Radev.
