The garbage crisis in Lyulin is no longer a challenge. It is turning into a disaster. For this reason, the mayor of the district, Georgi Todorov, will hold an emergency meeting at the “Moskovska” 33 with the Mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev, Deputy Mayor for Ecology Nadezhda Bobcheva and the Head of the Inspectorate Nikolay Nedelkov, BTA reports.
The situation in Lyulin has long passed the point of "temporary difficulty in cleaning". In recent days, the situation has worsened to a point that no responsible manager can ignore. There are containers that have not been serviced for more than a week. In many places, the bins themselves are not visible from the piles of garbage. Streets are blocked, sidewalks are impassable, parking spaces are swallowed by garbage. Fires from burning garbage threaten cars and people. Citizens report that they feel a strong stench and find dead rodents.
Today's emergency meeting has clear goals:
-to develop an immediate, realistic and guaranteed plan to manage the crisis;
-to provide additional equipment, teams and resources;
-to draw up and follow a clear schedule that will put an end to the two-month “patching up the situation”.
“Lyulin is the largest district in Bulgaria, over 200,000 residents, nearly a fifth of all Sofia residents. A district that generates 80 tons of waste daily. This is a city within a city. And when such a district remains without adequate garbage collection for months, this is not a logistical problem. This is a blow to the health and dignity of the people,“ said Mayor Georgi Todorov.
The results of the talks in the Sofia Municipality will be announced later today.
