Atanas Zafirov: The last few weeks have been a turning point for the country, and the voice of the citizens has been clearly heard and there is no turning back - 1

The last few weeks have been a turning point for the country, and the voice of the citizens has been clearly heard. This was stated at a briefing by the chairman of the “BSP – United Left“ Atanas Zafirov.

According to him, the public tension and mass dissatisfaction have sent a categorical signal to the political class, which cannot be ignored. Zafirov stressed that the BSP's position is in line with people's expectations for change, more justice and responsible governance.

The party stated that they will present details of their next political actions, in line with public attitudes and the development of the political situation in the country.

The BSP-OL coalition became part of the joint government and the regular government due to the need for stability and predictability in the state. The government resigned, driven by our responsibility to the citizens. Historically, the BSP and the left-wing parties have always placed the state and civil peace above party interests. This was stated by the outgoing Deputy Prime Minister and BSP leader Atanas Zafirov during a briefing at the party headquarters.

He specified that the BSP National Council will be convened next week.

Among the BSP's successes in government, he highlighted the war against the “houses of horrors“, measures for the water crisis and others. He clarified that BSP-OL is categorically against Bulgaria providing a guarantee worth 1.2 billion euros to Ukraine.

„We have not stopped hearing the protests, and this time we heard them. The young generation, our children, actively participated in them, part of our generation was also at these protests. The last few weeks have been crucial. The ruling majority has shown that it knows how to hear the voice of citizens and act adequately. The path for us is one - a frank conversation and a process of reintegration of people with left-wing thinking. It is important for us, no matter how long it takes us. I believe that there is an important question on the agenda - can all those who brought the vote of no confidence and those in the government admit that the people on the street are skeptical of the entire political elite? Can we return to a direct conversation about the future of Bulgaria? It is important now not to destroy the state and to preserve statehood and stability, because the tremor is very serious and we, as part of the ruling majority, have taken the first step towards containing it. However, the next steps depend on all political forces“, Zafirov also said.

The outgoing Deputy Prime Minister added that the BSP-OL will consistently defend the adoption of a socially oriented budget, whose philosophy is the protection of the social rights of a wide range of citizens.

“Bulgaria needs a stable, calm and reasonable political environment“, he added.

Rumen Petkov is categorical that the consolidation processes in the left are irreversible and have no alternative: “Without a doubt, we from the BSP were the ones who suffered the most from the creation of the cabinet. We showed that we are a democratic organization – there was no confrontation with anyone who expressed a different opinion. We made two mistakes - one was that we failed to present the successes of our ministers and our parliamentary group. It is very important for us that the budget is adopted. Otherwise, many groups will suffer.“
