Will the garbage crisis in the capital deepen? The garbage collection contracts for six more districts expire at the end of the month.

Thus, the residents of the districts of „Sredets“, „Triaditsa“, „Oborishte“, „Lozenets“, „Studentski grad“ and „Vazrazhdane“ will face the ordeal of containers full of garbage. Three more districts will have the same problem in early January – „Serdika“, „Ilinden“ and “Nadezhda“.

Nevertheless, Mayor Vasil Terziev announced that he will not leave his post because of the garbage crisis. Today he joined another volunteer campaign to clean up the largest metropolitan district – “Lyulin“.

Dozens of volunteers rolled up their sleeves today to help with the waste removal.

The Mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev also joined in the cleaning.

Vasil Terziev, Mayor of Sofia: “These are temporary efforts. What I am constantly working on between such crisis solutions is to have a permanent solution. In early January, we expect all the necessary equipment, teams are being assembled, and until then, with joint efforts, we will maintain things.“

The mayor was categorical that the garbage crisis will not cost him his position.

Vasil Terziev, mayor of Sofia: “Garbage will not be the reason why I will leave “Moskovska“ 33. This is another crisis that we will deal with. The question is a choice - whether you choose to be a victim and complain, or accept the circumstances as they are, roll up your sleeves and engage everyone who wants to contribute something.“

At the end of December, garbage collection contracts expire in six more metropolitan areas, and in January - in another three. The municipality assures that they already have an action plan.

Nadezhda Bobcheva, Deputy Mayor for Ecology of Sofia: “We will announce our decision next week and I suspect we will surprise you.“

Until then, the local government will also rely on the help of citizens.
