The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metzola announced today in the plenary hall in Strasbourg that the European Public Prosecutor's Office has requested that she lift the immunity of Bulgarian MEP Ilhan Küçük. The reason is a report filed against him for improper spending of EU funds.
An MEP from the group of the Liberals and APS of Ahmed Dogan - Ilhan Küçük, announced on Monday that he had been warned that his parliamentary immunity was being requested to be lifted, without giving details. “I admit that I was really surprised when I received the information that the lifting of my parliamentary immunity would be requested during the plenary week. The reason for this is a report that, in my opinion, aims to question my name, my reputation and the trust I have received from both citizens and institutions," Küçük wrote on Facebook.
He assures that he will assist the authorities in verifying the report. Küçük is the chairman of the European Parliament's legal affairs committee, which deals with requests for the lifting of immunity.
This week, the EP will also decide on the lifting of Nikola Mirchev's immunity at the request of the Belgian authorities, who are investigating the Chinese company Huawei for influence peddling and lobbying in the EP.
