The outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov will participate in the European Union (EU)-Western Balkans Summit in Brussels, the government press service announced. The meeting precedes the regular meeting of the heads of state and government of the European Union in the Belgian capital.

The main topics will be the deepening of the strategic relations between the EU and the Western Balkans and the benefits they bring to citizens. The talks will highlight the importance of political and economic ties between the EU and its Western Balkan partners, especially in the current geopolitical context and in view of the need to strengthen regional relations, the press service explained.

The discussion is an expression of the importance of the political and economic relations between the EU and its Western Balkan partners. The meeting is expected to reaffirm the importance of progress in reforms, alignment with the EU acquis, regional cooperation, good neighbourly relations and reconciliation.

On 10 December, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić met in Brussels with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. Among the topics discussed with Ursula von der Leyen was Serbia's progress on its path towards the European Union. “As we underlined with European Council President Antonio Costa during our visits earlier this year, we remain fully committed to seeing a democratic Serbia in the EU. You can count on our support”, von der Leyen wrote in a post on the Ex platform. Antonio Costa stressed that the EU remains fully committed to seeing a democratic Serbia as a member.

In October, following a meeting between Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović and European Council President Antonio Costa in Brussels, it was announced that Montenegro would host the EU-Western Balkans summit on June 1, 2026, Montenegrin national television RTCG reported. “Next year, when we celebrate 20 years since the restoration of Montenegrin independence, we also receive strong support from our European partners in organizing the EU-Western Balkans summit on June 1 next year“, Milatović said after the meeting.
