Nearly a month after the introduction of the euro: How much do basic foods cost - 1

A month after Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone, the prices of basic food products continue to be under close scrutiny.

The main product in the inspection is pork - a key part of the traditional Bulgarian table. In the last months of the old year, roast pork was on sale and was sold for 4.85 euros per kilogram. Currently, however, the product is at a regular price of 8.18 euros, NOVA NEWS reports.

Despite the increase, Uti Bachvarov noted that pork remains relatively affordable and continues to be among the preferred products for family gatherings and festive occasions.

There is no change in the price of potatoes compared to previous months. Statistics show that tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes have risen in price significantly since June, but over the past two months their prices have remained relatively stable.

According to Bachvarov, compared to a number of European countries, the prices of similar products in Bulgarian stores remain lower.

More moderate changes are observed in fruit. Bananas have risen in price by about 5 euro cents, which experts define as a minimal and expected increase for January, when transport and energy costs are traditionally higher.

Tangerines are sold for 1.78 euros. They are cheaper compared to November, but more expensive compared to December by about 16 percent.

Imperial pickles are among the few products with a distinct decrease in price. If in November and December a kilogram cost 6.64 euros, then in January the price dropped by about 1.50 euros. This price reduction has been defined as a “post-New Year bonus“ for consumers.

Among the products for making banitsa, a more serious price increase is reported. Cheese has increased its price by nearly 13% for the period from November to January. According to Uti Bachvarov, the traditional Bulgarian product is now mainly offered in larger packages, which further burdens the family budget.

There has been no price reduction for eggs either. The regular price for 10 pieces is 3.37 euros both before the Christmas holidays and at the moment. Calculations show that the price of one egg has increased from about 40 to over 60 stotinki.
