At midnight on January 31, 2026, the one-month period in which we can pay in levs and euros expires. From February 1st, the euro remains the only official means of payment in Bulgaria. This is announced by the Ministry of Finance.
From the beginning of February, the lev will no longer be accepted for payment for goods, services and obligations. Citizens are obliged to pay in euros. Merchants are no longer required to accept levs, and change for each transaction will be returned only in euros.
The Finance Ministry states that the display of prices in both currencies will be maintained until 08.08.2026, in order to ensure transparency and prevent speculation.
Until June 30, 2026, commercial banks and "Bulgarian Posts" will exchange levs for euros free of charge. After this period, the Bulgarian National Bank will continue to exchange levs for euros indefinitely and free of charge.
