Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev Appoints Eng. Nikolay Nedelkov as Deputy Mayor - 1

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev appointed Eng. Nikolay Nedelkov as Deputy Mayor for the "Environment" Department within the framework of the new management structure of Sofia Municipality introduced.

The former director of the Sofia Inspectorate will assume his new position on March 4. The separation from the previous Deputy Mayor Nadezhda Bobcheva is by mutual consent, focus-news.net revealed.

"The work of Eng. Nedelkov in the Sofia Inspectorate and during the crisis headquarters has shown professionalism, principle and efficiency. That is why I trust him to take over the "Environment" Department at this important moment for the city“, said Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev.

The change is part of the efforts to strengthen the operational and control focus on waste management and increase efficiency in the sector. The topic “waste“ requires a strengthened, permanent and operational control focus, which requires adapting the management model in the “Environment“ direction.

Nikolai Nedelkov is an environmental engineer with over ten years of experience in the Sofia Municipality system in the field of waste control and management. He started working at the Sofia Inspectorate in 2013 as a senior inspector, and subsequently led key units related to the control of construction waste and the counteraction to unregulated backfilling.

At the end of 2023, he was appointed director of the Sofia Inspectorate. In this role, he initiated a large-scale inspection of illegal landfills in Sofia, during which over 240 unregulated sites were mapped. Under his leadership, control over the removal of construction waste and soil masses was strengthened and sanctions for violations were increased.

In 2024 and 2025, the Sofia Inspectorate reported a record volume of inspections, acts and imposed sanctions for two consecutive years, with a clear focus on abuses in the waste management system and increased civic activism.

Since the beginning of January 2025, he has had a key role as coordinator of the waste collection crisis headquarters in Sofia. He organized extraordinary inspections, logistical coordination and operational measures, which led to the stabilization of the service in the affected areas and the restoration of regular waste collection.

Eng. Nedelkov has a master's degree in “Environmental Risk Assessment and Sustainable Development“, as well as a postgraduate qualification in “Crisis Management“ from the Military Academy.

The Sofia Municipality thanks the current Deputy Mayor Nadezhda Bobcheva for her efforts and work in the interest of the city.

FOCUS recalls that Bobcheva previously announced on her Facebook page that she was leaving the Sofia Municipality and “I am embarking on a new adventure”.
