The team of the acting Minister of Justice Andrey Yankulov is starting to develop strict criteria for the nomination of the next Prosecutor General of the Republic of Bulgaria. The goal of the justice department is for the procedure to provide a candidate with categorical public and professional support, with the rules remaining as a legacy for use by the future regular cabinet.
The initiative became clear after today's meeting of the Prosecutorial College of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC). The Minister of Justice kept his initial request to personally attend all possible meetings of the personnel body. According to him, developing a high standard in the selection of key figures in the judicial system is a top priority of the current government.
"In my opinion, the Minister of Justice should not remain uninvolved in resolving key issues such as how the judicial system should be managed and, above all, the nomination of a Prosecutor General. So far, the ministers of justice have refused to propose a candidacy because they believed that it would be somehow politically linked. But if a candidate supported by society and professional communities is nominated through the minister, the nomination will not be political. And it will allow the SJC to choose from among more candidates, because so far we see a lack of sufficient competition," Andrey Yankulov told the personnel officers.
It is expected that at their next meeting, the magistrates of the Prosecutor's College will consider the official proposal of the Minister of Justice to appoint an acting Prosecutor General.
Meanwhile, the members of the College unanimously elected Mina Staykova for a second term as head of the District Prosecutor's Office in the city of Targovishte. Andrey Yankulov described her performance as extremely convincing. He used the occasion and called on prosecutors in the country to show greater activity and courage in their participation in procedures for the selection of administrative heads, in order to end the practice of competitions with a single candidate.
