The Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Interior and the State Agency for National Security have established a National Interdepartmental Unit for the upcoming parliamentary elections

The unit's activities aim to guarantee the observance of the political rights of citizens, to ensure a rapid and adequate response to counteract crimes related to the electoral process and to ensure the lawful conduct of the elections for the National Assembly.

The Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Interior and the State Agency for National Security have established a National Interdepartmental Unit for the upcoming parliamentary elections  - 1

Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, Acting Minister of Interior Emil Dechev and Acting Chairman of the State Agency "National Security" (DANS) Denyo Denev signed a joint order to establish a National Interdepartmental Unit in connection with the holding of the elections for the 52nd National Assembly on April 19, 2026. This was reported by the press center of the State Prosecution.

The National Interdepartmental Unit includes Deputy Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova, prosecutors from the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office (SCP) and representatives of the leadership of the Ministry of Interior and DANS. It will operate from the day of the opening of the election campaign – March 20, 2026, within 30 days after the official announcement by the Central Election Commission (CEC) of the final election results.

The unit's activities aim to guarantee compliance with the political rights of citizens, ensure a rapid and adequate response to counteract crimes related to the electoral process and for the lawful conduct of the National Assembly elections. Information will be exchanged with the CEC and regional interdepartmental units in the country, and the data received will be analyzed and summarized.
A duty unit will also function within the CEC, which will process all incoming signals related to election violations.

The establishment of a National Interdepartmental Unit is regulated in Art. 18, para. 5 of the Electoral Code, according to which “the Prosecutor General and the Minister of Internal Affairs shall form joint headquarters (teams) for operational cooperation in the fight against crimes related to the electoral process. The headquarters (teams) shall operate throughout the entire election campaign“.
