The Sofia City Court refused to release Evelin Banev-Brendo, convicted of drug trafficking, from prison early.
The case was initiated at the proposal of the head of the Sofia prison Borislav Chorbanski, who was subsequently removed by the former Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev. An inspection was also ordered in the case, NOVA reports.
Gergana Kyurkchiyska, a prosecutor from the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office (SGP), challenged the proposal thus deposited by the director of the Sofia prison for the early conditional release of Evelin Banev – Brendo and noted that to date the person has served the sentence of 2 years 6 months and 5 days. She appealed to Judge Mihov with a request to disregard the request for early release of Brendo.
We recall that at the first instance hearing on February 20, it was announced that the proceedings were initiated by the then head of the Sofia Prison, who was then temporarily removed. An authorized representative of the current head withdrew the request in the courtroom, due to which the case was terminated.
At the end of June 2024, Evelin Banev – Brendo surrendered to the Sofia Prison. He was declared an international wanted person in 2018. At the end of May 2025, Evelin Banev – Brendo received 10 and a half years in prison with an initial strict regime. This was finally decided by the CAS. The sentence is the cumulative sentences from Romania and Italy. This confirmed the decision of the Sofia City Court.
