April snow of over 3 meters broke the record on Botev Peak - 1

A historical record for the thickest snow cover was recorded this morning on Botev Peak. On the peak of Stara Planina, meteorologists measured an impressive 333 centimeters of April snow, which officially surpasses the previous absolute maximum of 325 centimeters for this location, reports the specialized website "stringmeteo.bg".

Snowfalls in the highest part of the mountain have not stopped, which creates prerequisites for additional accumulation on the record base.

"Record on Botev Peak! This morning, 333 cm of snow cover was measured. The previous record is 325 cm, and today's achievement is probably not final, because the snowfall continues, "the organization "Meteo Bulgaria" wrote on its page on social networks. Experts note that this phenomenon is extremely curious against the background of global warming trends. "It is good when we can also talk about such records in times of prevailing heat," meteorologists add.

The contrast with previous spring periods is drastic and shows serious climate fluctuations. Just two years ago, in 2024, Botev Peak came into the spotlight with a completely opposite anomaly. Then, unusually high temperatures melted the snow completely on April 16, which is a precedent and an extreme rarity for an altitude of 2376 meters.

The winter situation remains severe in the other native massifs. Another 20 centimeters of snow fell on Vitosha, with the total cover from the last cycle of precipitation reaching up to 40 centimeters in places. "Avalanche Bulgaria", citing data from the Bulgarian Avalanche Association, warns of a complicated situation. Today's first sunny day after the heavy snowfalls and strong winds poses enormous risks for tourists, since statistically it is during such a sharp warming that the avalanche danger in the mountain reaches its peak.

Despite the brief clearing today, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) predicts a new portion of clouds for the weekend. Mostly cloudy weather with significant rainfall is expected throughout the country. The snowfall limit will be above 1500 meters above sea level. Maximum temperatures in populated areas will vary between 12° and 17°, while in Sofia the thermometers will read around 13°.
