Teodor Slavev: The withdrawal of key figures triggers a collapse in GERB - 1

Boyko Borisov's party is undergoing processes of decline, which may escalate after the withdrawal of key figures in recent days. This prediction was made by political scientist Dr. Teodor Slavev in the program “Out of the Scenario“ on "Eurocom" TV.

The reason for his comment was two key events from the end of April 2026. On April 24, the long-time mayor of Stara Zagora, Zhivko Todorov, officially announced that he was leaving the Executive Committee of GERB in order to focus entirely on the governance of the city. Just a day earlier, former Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev surprisingly resigned from his seat in the newly elected 52nd National Assembly, although he remained part of the party's legal team.

According to Slavev, these significant departures from the party's top ranks reveal internal tensions and could be followed by more resignations. Although GERB continues to rely on established figures as leaders of its lists, the party is faced with the existential question of whether it has a political future without the direct control of its leader.

Regarding the political crisis and the state of the parties, the political scientist also commented on the situation in the BSP. After the early elections on April 19, in which the coalition "BSP - United Left" managed to secure representation in the new parliament under the leadership of the chairman elected in February, Krum Zarkov, the left continues to find its way.

According to Slavev, the achieved election result is only the first step, and the formation still needs a deep ideological and personnel reorganization. He noted that figures like Zarkov have the potential to become a real symbol of change, but the process of returning the full trust of the voters requires time.

Slavev emphasized that corruption at the highest levels of power and the lack of justice remain the most serious problems facing the state. He gave the example of the investigation into the millions siphoned off from the construction of the “Hemus“ highway. The scandal, in which data was revealed about over 55 million leva withdrawn in cash through shell companies, continues to stall. According to the analyst, the information about "crushed" accusations and the lack of convictions show the need for urgent reforms in the prosecution service.

At the end of his analysis, the political scientist recalled the events of December 2025, when mass civil protests forced the previous cabinet to resign. Slavev expressed hope that this civil energy will ultimately lead to real changes in the Supreme Judicial Council and the election of a new Prosecutor General who will restore trust in the institutions.
