Drunk BMW driver breaks police epaulette in Botevgrad - 1

Police officers detained a 30-year-old unlicensed driver with 1.67 per mille of alcohol after a chase and physical altercation in Botevgrad, reports the Sofia Regional Department of Internal Affairs. The driver of a BMW resisted arrest, injuring one of the uniformed officers and damaging his equipment.

The action began around 6:00 a.m. on Monday morning on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard. A patrol car spotted a BMW, whose driver lost control and skidded when attempting to make a right turn. The uniformed officers immediately gave a sound and light signal to stop.

Instead of obeying the police orders, the man behind the wheel increased his speed and demonstratively tried to escape. “The driver did not obey and increased his speed. We managed to detain him a little later in front of a block in one of the residential districts of the city“, one of the patrol officers who participated in the pursuit told NOVA.

The chase ended in the residential district of "Saransk", where the patrol officer managed to cross the path of the fugitive. When an attempt was made to carry out a routine check, the 30-year-old local resident began to behave extremely aggressively and offered fierce physical resistance when being detained.

During the collision, the driver tore off the epaulette of one of the police officers. As a result of the pulling, the uniformed officer's reflective vest and body camera fell to the ground, who escaped with abrasions on his arm.

The subsequent breathalyzer test revealed that the driver's aggression was provoked by serious alcohol consumption. “The alcohol test showed 1.67 per mille“, stated junior inspector Plamen Simeonov from the Botevgrad Police Department.

A check of the Ministry of Interior's records shows that the man is a classic repeat offender on the road - he has never held a driver's license in his life. He was sanctioned by the authorities for exactly the same offense in 2018.

The offender was detained for up to 24 hours. A rapid police investigation has already been initiated into the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
