A conflict over fears that the grandson would sell the family house is the leading version of the double murder and subsequent suicide in the Plovdiv village of Popovitsa. This became clear at a joint briefing of the District Prosecutor's Office and the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Plovdiv. Investigators revealed that the 82-year-old former soldier shot his 21-year-old grandson four times before taking the lives of his wife and himself, Nova TV reported.
The serious crime was committed on Saturday morning, with a 112 call being made at around 8:30 a.m. Police, fire and emergency teams were sent to the scene. In the two-story house, in a room on the first floor, the bodies of an 82-year-old man and his 76-year-old wife, who was bedridden, were found. On the second floor, the body of their 21-year-old grandson was found. All three died from gunshot wounds.
At the briefing, it became clear that the main motive for the tragedy was the deteriorating relations between the grandfather and grandson. According to the Deputy District Prosecutor of Plovdiv Angel Angelov, the reason was the likelihood that he would sell the family house, the ownership of which had previously been transferred to him by his grandfather.
The grandson had been living with his grandparents for about a month and a half, working as a security guard. The evidence collected so far indicates that there were frequent gatherings with friends in the house, with which the elderly man did not agree, but so far no reports of scandals or domestic violence have been filed with the police.
The investigation has established that the elderly woman was shot with one shot, and the grandson - with four. After killing his relatives, the 82-year-old man called his son-in-law to tell him that “everything is over“, after which he also ended his own life. It was his daughter, after losing contact with him, who reported the incident to the emergency number.
The Director of the ODMVR-Plovdiv, Senior Commissioner Stanimir Kaloferov, confirmed that the weapon of the crime was an illegally owned hunting rifle, and several shell casings were also found at the scene. The leading version remains that the 82-year-old man is the perpetrator and there is no evidence of any other person's involvement. The investigation into the case continues with witness interviews and the ordering of numerous expert tests, including for the presence of alcohol and drugs in the blood of the three deceased.
