From MP candidate to prison in the UK: Pomorie man convicted of drugs - 1

A former MP candidate from Pomorie has been sentenced to 30 months in prison in the UK for drug distribution.

This was revealed by burgasonline.bg.

This concerns 47-year-old Aleksandar Nikolinov Dobrev, who was arrested in February in Barnstaple, Devon. The police stopped him for a check for suspicious driving late at night.

A search of the car found 23 cocaine capsules hidden behind the steering wheel, as well as three more in his sock. He also had over 700 pounds in cash.

Initially, Dobrev claimed that he was a tourist and looking for work in the UK, denying that the drugs were his.

Later, however, he admitted that his acquaintances had referred him to people from the criminal contingent, who provided him with a car and assigned him to distribute drugs.

At Exeter Crown Court, Judge James Patrick rejected his defense as unfounded.

According to the magistrates, the Bulgarian had participated in the distribution of the drug for several days.

The case is also of interest because of Dobrev's profile. He is described as an educated man with a master's degree in business administration, a degree in international relations and proficiency in four languages.

This background contrasts sharply with his involvement in criminal activity.

After the court rejected his explanations, Dobrev pleaded guilty to possession of a class A drug with intent to distribute.

He received a 30-month prison sentence, and after serving part of the sentence he will be deported from the UK.
