Hungary still believes Putin-Trump meeting will take place - 1

Hungary remains ready to host a high-level peace meeting between the US and Russia, as unity gives hope for resolving the war in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto said in an interview with American media today, quoted by the Hungarian news agency MTI, BTA reported.

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry in Budapest, Szijjarto welcomed the fact that the US and Russian presidents spoke again last week, so there is hope for a personal meeting in Budapest, although questions have been raised about the timing of it.

Szijjarto said that Hungary remains ready to host the meeting. "Our government has been representing the cause of peace for the past three and a half years", he said, adding that Hungary would provide all the necessary conditions for the success of the meeting and expressed hope that it would take place.

Commenting on the postponement, the minister said that the date had not yet been set. He also expressed hope that his meeting with his American counterpart Marco Rubio would provide a clearer picture.

Szijjártó said that the existence of civilized relations between the United States and Russia has always made the world, including Central Europe, a safer place.

The minister stressed that it was clear from the beginning that many in Europe would be disappointed that the supposedly internationally isolated Hungary had been invited to host the US-Russia summit, considered the most important meeting in recent decades.

He added that it was not Hungary that was actually isolated, but the European Union, adding that the EU played no role in resolving the current crises around the world, which he explained by the bloc's pro-war stance.

Regarding the international arrest warrant against the Russian president, Szijjártó noted that Vladimir Putin had recently visited the United States, where he was not arrested, and if he arrived in Hungary, he would not be arrested and there.
