Hurricane Melissa has claimed 46 lives in the Caribbean, according to the American television network NBC.
According to updated data, 26 people died in Haiti, 19 in Jamaica and one in the Dominican Republic.
When passing through these countries, Melissa was rated as a category 4 or 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Maximum sustained winds at its epicenter reached 82 m/s.
According to the latest data from the US National Hurricane Center, Melissa has passed through the Bahamas and is moving deeper into the Atlantic Ocean, having already weakened to a post-tropical cyclone.
