US President Donald Trump said he had ordered the US Department of War to prepare for possible military intervention in Nigeria if the Nigerian government "continues to allow the killings of Christians", Reuters reported, quoted by NOVA.
In addition, the US government will stop all aid and any kind of support for the African country, the head of state announced in a post on his social platform "Truth Social".
The Nigerian government previously said it would continue to fight extremism, and indicated that it hopes Washington will remain a close ally. This came after Trump added the West African country to a list of countries he believes are a threat to Christianity.
