Four fighter jets were scrambled from airports in Romania last night after Russian strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube were detected, Agerpres reported, BTA reported.
A statement from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense said that at 0:17 a.m., two F-16 fighter jets took off from the Fetești air base in accordance with air policing procedures.
Later, at 2:45 a.m., two German Eurofighter jets took off from the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base to monitor and ensure the security of Romanian airspace.
The commanders of the operation had permission to open fire on air targets if they entered Romanian airspace and threatened the safety of citizens, the statement said, specifying that no entry into Romania's national space was registered and no debris was found on Romanian territory.
The Ministry of Defense in Bucharest once again condemns the Russian Federation's attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and defines it as a serious violation of international law and a threat to regional security.
