For the first time in more than half a century, two million people have voted in the New York City municipal election, which will determine the city's new mayor, the city's election commission announced.

“We officially announce that we have reached the 2 million vote mark for the first time since 1969“, the commission said in a statement on the social media platform X.

New York has a population of approximately 8.5 million people. In the previous mayoral election in 2021, the total voter turnout was 1.15 million.

In addition to the mayoral race, New Yorkers were called on to vote for several municipal offices, including district attorney and city council member.

Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliva are running for mayor alongside former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Current New York Mayor Eric Adams announced his withdrawal from the race in September.

According to polls, the Democratic candidate is the favorite. Before the vote, US President Donald Trump urged voters to vote for Cuomo and threatened to cut federal funding for New York if Mamdani, whom he considers a communist, wins. The candidate describes himself as a “democratic socialist“.
