Mississippi plant explosion causes ammonia leak, evacuations - 1

An explosion at a hydrogen and nitrogen plant in Mississippi has caused an ammonia leak and forced residents of surrounding areas to evacuate, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said in an article in "Ex" that emergency services from across the state are responding to the anhydrous ammonia leak at the CF Industries plant north of Yazoo City.

There are no reports of deaths or injuries, he said.

"I thank all emergency services and emergency managers in Mississippi for their quick response to the leak," he said he.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Protection said in an article in the "Ex" that "air monitoring operations are underway and will continue for as long as necessary to ensure public safety."

Anhydrous ammonia is used as a fertilizer to provide nitrogen for corn and wheat plants. If a person touches ammonia in its gaseous or liquid form, it can cause burns, the AP reported.
