The Lebanese group "Hezbollah" said today that it has the "legal right to resist the (Israeli) occupation" and that it supports the Lebanese army, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

The Shiite movement also said that while Lebanon is bound by the ceasefire with Israel, the country is not obliged to participate in political negotiations with Israel.

Last week, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun ordered the army to counter any Israeli incursion into southern Lebanon, following a midnight operation by Israeli military forces in which they entered Lebanese soil and killed a local government official despite a ceasefire brokered by the United States.

"We affirm our legitimate right to resist the occupation and aggression and to stand with our army and people in defense of the country's sovereignty," the group said in a statement.

"Hezbollah" added that he was exercising his right to self-defense against "an enemy that imposes war on our country, does not stop its attacks, and seeks to subjugate our state".

In November 2024, the United States brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon after more than a year of conflict sparked by the Gaza war, but Israeli forces still occasionally strike Lebanese territory.
