Georgian Prime Minister: European bureaucracy stopped us from joining the EU - 1

Since Georgia submitted its application for EU membership in 2022, it has been facing artificially created obstacles on the way, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said, quoted by the Georgian public media GPB, BTA reported.

He stressed that Georgia is not the cause of the stalemate, but the European bureaucracy has decided to freeze the country's accession process.

"If we compare Georgia with other candidate countries such as Moldova or Bosnia and Herzegovina, we will see that our country is significantly ahead in terms of democracy, human rights and economic development. According to all these indicators, Georgia is in a much stronger position. By the way, in January 2023, the European Commission published a report with assessments according to various criteria, the results of which showed that Georgia ranks much higher than Moldova and Bosnia. However, it was these two countries that received candidate status, and Georgia's candidacy was rejected without any explanations or arguments," Kobakhidze said.

"This marked the beginning of tension in relations between the European Union and Georgia. In the end, it was not Georgia that stopped its progress, but the European bureaucracy that decided to block the European integration process for an indefinite period of time," the Georgian Prime Minister said.
