Hungary, after being exempted from sanctions on Russian oil, has secured the lowest energy prices in Europe. This opinion was expressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin's special representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, Kirill Dmitriev, TASS news agency reports.
"[Prime Minister] Viktor Orban is protecting Hungary by exempting the country from sanctions on Russian oil, ensuring that the country has the lowest energy prices in Europe“, he wrote in English, commenting on the Hungarian prime minister's publication about the deal with the United States.
Earlier, Orban announced after talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House that Budapest had received from Washington a full exemption from US sanctions that had hindered oil and gas supplies from Russia.
Reuters, citing a US administration official, also reported that the US had granted Hungary a one-year exemption from the obligation to purchase Russian energy products.
On October 22, the US Treasury Department included "Rosneft", "Lukoil“ and its subsidiaries in a new package of anti-Russian sanctions that will come into full force on November 21. The United States said the restrictions are aimed at putting pressure on Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.
The Hungarian government had previously expressed concerns that new US sanctions against Russian oil and gas companies could seriously harm the interests of Hungary, which continues to receive most of its energy supplies from Russia under long-term contracts.
