Former US President Joe Biden has sharply criticized the current head of state Donald Trump, noting that he is destroying not only the East Wing of the White House, but the entire country, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
"I knew that Trump would take destructive actions against the country, but I must admit that I had no idea that he would become a real destroyer", Biden said at the Democratic Party gala in Omaha, Nebraska.
The former Democratic president, who is now 82 years old, said this in connection with Trump's project to build a ballroom in the place of the East Wing of the White House. Trump had previously said his plans for a ballroom "will not affect the building as it is now."
"This is a perfect symbol of his presidency," Biden said. "Trump has taken a devastating action not only against the people's home, but against the Constitution, the rule of law and our democracy itself," the former president added. Biden addressed Trump directly in his speech, saying that his behavior has shamed the United States and put the interests of the wealthy above those of ordinary Americans.
Biden described Democratic victories in the gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as the mayoral election in New York, as a ray of light in a "very, very dark moment." and added that he had sent a message to the Republican president with the American people.
The former White House incumbent has rarely made public appearances since leaving office in January. He had intended to run against Trump for a second term but backed out after a disastrous debate and pressure from within the Democratic Party.
