Donald Trump became the first sitting US president in nearly half a century to attend a regular season game of the National Football League (NFL, American football - ed. note), the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

Trump attended the meeting between the local team "Washington Commanders" and "Detroit Lions" in the federal capital. He was accompanied by Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth.

A sitting US president attended a regular season NFL game for the third time in history, the AP reports. The previous two were in 1969 and 1978 - Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, respectively.

In February, Trump became the first sitting US president to attend the Super Bowl - the largest and most commercial sporting event in the US (the NFL final - ed. note).

"I was a little late", he told reporters, arriving at "Northwest Stadium" in Washington for the game yesterday local time.

When Trump was shown on the video wall at the end of the first half, boos were heard from the stands, the AP notes.

"We're going to have a good game. Things are going very well. The country is doing well. "Democrats need to reopen it," the Republican president said, referring to the partial shutdown of the federal government.

On Saturday, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt announced that Trump wants the new Washington Commanders stadium to be named after him.

However, the US president did not bring luck to the hosts. The guests won the match convincingly with 44:22 points.

The Washington Commanders have so far had 3 wins and 7 losses in the regular season and the team's chances of qualifying for the playoffs seem illusory. On the other hand, the prospects for the "Detroit Lions", who have 6 wins and 3 losses, remain very good.

Trump criticized "corrupt journalists" from the BBC for the controversial montage of his speech, reported Agence France-Presse.

Earlier yesterday, the director general of the British public radio and television Tim Davey and the head of the media's news department Deborah Turnes resigned over the case.

"These are very dishonest people who tried to influence the outcome of the presidential election (in the US in November last year - ed.). On top of that, they come from a foreign country that many consider our number one ally. This is terrible for democracy!", Trump wrote on his social network "Truth Social".

The case, revealed by the British conservative newspaper "Daily Telegraph" on Tuesday, concerns a documentary broadcast a week before the US presidential election on November 5, 2024, AFP notes. The BBC was accused of editing passages from a speech by Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, in such a way that he appeared to tell his supporters that he would march with them to the Capitol to "fight with all his might".

This leaves viewers with the impression that Trump is encouraging his supporters to carry out the deadly storming of the US Congress on that day.
