A man sentenced to death for murders committed in 2004 was executed today by a firing squad in the state of South Carolina, Agence France-Presse reported.

Forty-four-year-old Stephen Bryant killed three men within five days. At the scene of the crime, he left a message written in the blood of his latest victim: "Catch me if you can".

This is the 43rd execution in the United States this year, and a similar number of death sentences have not been carried out since 2012. Three more are planned by the end of the year.

The majority of executions are carried out by lethal injection, with 35 such executions carried out in the country so far this year.

Five people were executed by nitrogen inhalation, a method used for the first time in the world in the state of Alabama last year and likened by UN experts to a form of "torture", and three by shooting in the state of South Carolina, for the first time in the United States since 2010.

The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of The 50 US states. Three others - California, Oregon and Pennsylvania - are observing a moratorium on executions by decision of the governor, AFP reports.
