Every 10 minutes a woman or girl was killed by her partner or family member last year, DPA reported, citing a UN report, BTA reported.

The latest report on gender-based killings of women was published yesterday by the UN agency that deals with crimes and the UN agency for women.

The document says that in 2024, about 83,000 women and girls were intentionally killed, with about 60% of cases by a family member or partner, the UN services reported. The report was published on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

At the same time, the proportion of gender-based murders of men committed by their relatives or partners is 11 percent.

According to UN data, femicide is most common in Africa, where 22,600 women were killed in 2024. Next is Asia with 17,400 women, and in North and South America the number was 7,700. In Europe, 2,100 women were killed last year, and in Oceania - 300.

In Africa, there are the most cases of women killed in which the victim and the perpetrator were intimate partners or relatives. There are 3 victims for every 100,000 women or girls. The proportion is lowest in Europe - 0.5 per 100,000 women.

In 2023, an estimated 51,100 girls and women were killed by intimate partners worldwide, out of a total of 85,000 women who died as a result of violence, according to data from last year.
