In a phone call, Chinese President Xi Jinping explained China's principled position on the Taiwan issue to U.S. President Donald Trump, said Peng Qing-en, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
“During the phone call, Xi Jinping clarified China's principled position on the Taiwan issue, stressing that the two countries should jointly safeguard the achievements of the victory in World War II“, he said at a briefing, commenting on the two leaders' conversation on Nov. 24.
The office spokesman explained that Xi Jinping's remarks were “of great guiding significance for Beijing's work on Taiwan“. "We will unite compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, remember history together, preserve the strength of our nation, cherish peace and build a common future," he added.
Peng Qing-en stressed the need to resolutely resist separatist forces in Taipei and to develop peaceful cooperation between mainland China and Taiwan. He reaffirmed China's commitment to maintaining peace in the region and "working together to ensure the prosperity of all Chinese people."
Meanwhile, the “Washington Post“ announced that the Taiwanese administration will allocate an additional $40 billion for defense, citing the island's President Lai Tsing-de.
He noted that the funds will be used to purchase weapons from the United States. Lai Tsing-de also said that the island's administration intends to invest in the development of technology and the military industry in the future.
