Bissau Umaro Sissoko Embalo, who fled Guinea-Bissau after being ousted by the military, arrived from Senegal in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo (RCC), Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported, citing Congolese government sources.
„President Sissoko Embalo arrived in Brazzaville on Saturday morning on a private jet chartered by the authorities“, the agency source said. According to available information, Sissokou Embalo will remain in the Republic of Korea for a certain period.
Oumaru Sissokou Embalo was detained around noon on 26 November by the military in his office in the presidential palace and was removed from power by a group of officers who had organized a coup d'état. Sissokou Embalo was taken to the building of the General Staff of the army and held there until late in the evening of 27 November, when, under pressure from the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), he was released by the military and allowed to leave the country. The government of neighboring Senegal sent a plane to Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, which took Sissokou Embalo to Dakar. It is still unclear whether Sissoko Embalo's release was subject to certain conditions imposed by the military authorities of Guinea-Bissau.
On November 27, one of the coup organizers, Major General Horta Inta-a, took office as the interim president of Guinea-Bissau.
The Republic of the Congo is not a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which unites 12 West African countries.
