Syrian President: Israel's Demand for Demilitarized Zone is Dangerous - 1

Interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa says Israel's demand for a demilitarized zone on the border with Syria is dangerous due to the unresolved issue of control over the zone.

„Discussing a demilitarized buffer zone on the border with Israel is a dangerous topic. The question arises as to who will guarantee the security of this zone, who will govern it if there is no Syrian army or security presence there. These are logical concerns,” he said Saturday at a forum in Doha, Qatar.

According to al-Sharaa, it is better for Syria to stick to the 1974 disengagement agreement with Israel, which is a long-term ceasefire.

“Its implementation can be considered successful,” al-Sharaa said. Currently, he said, Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty continue, with more than 400 violations recorded in a year, including an attack on a Damascus suburb in late November that killed more than 25 people.
