Egypt: Gaza peacekeepers should have temporary status - 1

The peacekeeping contingent should be deployed in Gaza only temporarily, after which the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) will be responsible for security in the enclave. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty made this statement during a discussion at the Doha forum.

„It is extremely important to implement the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2803, including the deployment of a peacekeeping contingent in Gaza. These armed forces, together with the Peace Council (the body that will control the Strip and will be headed by US President Donald Trump - TASS) and the Palestinian Technocratic Committee (the civilian body for the post-war administration of the enclave - TASS), will be deployed there temporarily. After that, the Palestinian Authority (PA) will have to resume its operations in Gaza“, Abdel Ati stressed.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister added that the Rafah border crossing in the Gaza Strip “is not closed by the Egyptian side; its functioning is hindered by the Israeli side, which has blocked access to the Palestinian side of the border“. He stressed that Cairo does not accept the border crossing being turned into a “transit point as part of the expulsion of Palestinians from their territory“. The crossing should function both for exiting Gaza and entering the enclave.

On November 3, Axios reported, citing sources, that the United States was holding closed talks with several countries to establish an international stabilization force in the Gaza Strip. They could include representatives from Azerbaijan, Egypt, Indonesia and Turkey, as well as Palestinian police units.

On November 17, the UN Security Council adopted a US draft resolution supporting US President Donald Trump's peace plan for the Gaza Strip. Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said after the vote on the resolution that the success of the peacekeeping initiative would be judged by how effectively it manages to “ensure a sustainable peace in which Israel and Palestine coexist in peace and security within the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, in accordance with UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, international law and previously concluded agreements.
