During a two-hour phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump's advisers, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the two sides discussed key issues related to the peace settlement in Ukraine, including territorial issues.
The discussion “was complex“, Axios reported, citing a source.
This particularly concerned Moscow's demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas - the US is trying “to develop new ideas for resolving this issue“, a second source said.
Another important issue was US security guarantees for Ukraine. One Axios source reported that the two sides had made “significant progress“ and are closer to an agreement, but much work remains.
“The main difficult issues relate to the territorial issue and security guarantees. We are striving to ensure that the agreed solutions are realistic, fair and sustainable“, said Ukrainian Ambassador to Washington Olga Stefanyshyna.
The Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, and the Chief of the General Staff, General Andriy Gnatov, are expected to return to Europe from Miami and hold a briefing to discuss the US proposals with Zelensky in London on Monday, Axios reported.
