Politico: Tokyo Rejects Brussels' Request to Seize Russian Assets on Legal Grounds - 1

Japan has rejected a proposal from European Union countries to expropriate frozen Russian assets worth approximately $30 billion, Politico reports, citing sources in the European External Action Service.

According to their information, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said that Japan does not have the right to dispose of Russian assets on legal grounds.

On October 2, Politico reportedthat the G7 EU countries are putting pressure on Japan and the United States to seize Russian assets frozen by Tokyo and Washington.

The European Union, Canada, the United States, and Japan have frozen Russian assets worth approximately $300 billion since the start of hostilities in Ukraine. Of these, approximately $5-6 billion are held in the United States, and the majority are in Europe, including the international platform Euroclear in Belgium, where $210 billion is stored.

As representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry warned, Moscow will immediately take steps in response to the possible confiscation of its assets in the West.
