During his visit to Moscow today, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that while achieving peace is complicated, the emerging plan to end the war in Ukraine offers significant hope, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported, quoted by BTA.

“The government is already working to ensure Hungary is best prepared for the new global and trade era after the end of the war“, Szijjártó said after meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

Szijjártó called the proposed peace plan “a serious ray of hope“ and expressed full support for US-Russian dialogue on the issue. "We hope that this dialogue will lead to peace and when peace comes, the era of sanctions will also end," he said, insisting that sanctions have already done enough damage to Europe.

"The new economic and trade era will bring enormous opportunities and we intend to secure the best starting position," the minister said, noting that 34 leading Hungarian entrepreneurs accompanied him on the trip.

He added that peace would not be easy after all. "We know that those who previously hindered peace will continue to undermine it, but we will do everything to prevent them," he added.

Szijjártó also announced the relocation of the operator of the TurkStream gas pipeline from the Netherlands to Hungary to ensure uninterrupted future operations, as well as faster-than-expected progress on the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant, with the originally planned 2026 phase due to start next week.

Finally, he highlighted sports cooperation, noting that the Russian women's basketball team recently played two games in Hungary, the first time in a long time that a Russian team sport has competed in Europe.
