Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with the “Al Jazeera“ television channel that Europe must help Ukraine make “certain difficult decisions“ to prevent greater losses, as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to change the regional security system, the “Türkiye Today“ website reported, quoted by BTA.
In front of “Al Jazeera“ Fidan stressed that Turkey has worked intensively over the past four years to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace in Ukraine, noting that the ongoing hostilities risk further escalation, including in the Black Sea.
“Europe must help the Ukraine to make certain difficult decisions“, Fidan commented, noting that “although such choices, especially regarding territory, are extremely painful - they may be necessary to avoid greater losses”. Fidan also stressed that conditions on the battlefield are constantly changing, with Russian forces currently appearing to be advancing.
Despite diplomatic efforts, Fidan warned that while negotiations are underway, fighting is also continuing, increasing the risks of the conflict spilling beyond Ukraine's borders.
In front of “Al Jazeera” Fidan also confirmed Turkey's readiness to host additional peace talks in Istanbul, emphasizing the role of the recent talks in the Turkish metropolis, stating: “These talks laid the foundation for today's discussions“.
Fidan also warned that the war was increasingly affecting the Black Sea, where commercial ships and tankers have been targeted in in recent weeks. "If the war continues, it could spread even further into Europe," he said, stressing the need for an immediate end to the conflict. "Our policy is always aimed at easing tensions and supporting peace," Fidan added.
