The Ukrainian army announced today that it has blocked Russian forces in the northern part of the city of Kupyansk in the northeastern Kharkiv region, Ukrinform reported, quoted by BTA.
"In fact, I have been saying for more than a day now that Russian troops are blocked in the northern part of Kupyansk. And this is more about the outskirts of the city than the city itself. Yes, undoubtedly, at the moment the Russian troops in the city cannot receive reinforcements," summarized Ukrainian military spokesman Viktor Tregubov.
These claims have not been independently verified. There has been no comment from Russia so far.
Kupyansk is one of the main targets of the Russian army, which has been trying to take it for months. Russia had already captured the city at the start of the war in 2022, but Ukraine retook it in the fall of that year.
The Russian army announced late last month that it had retaken Kupyansk. Ukrainian forces denied this, but yesterday said they had retaken parts of the city and several surrounding villages.
Also on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Kupyansk in a show of force that the city had not been captured by Russia.
