Nearly 780,000 people have returned to Syria since the change of power in the country in December 2024, reports the information structure of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA - ReliefWeb). Over 1.6 million internally displaced persons have also returned to their settlements, the data is based on information from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), quoted by BTA, reports News.bg.

According to the UNHCR, as of August 14, 2025, since December 8, 2024, a total of 779,473 Syrians have returned to the country from neighboring countries, and 1,694,418 internally displaced persons have returned to their homes, TASS reports.

From August 6 to 12, 776 people received transport assistance at Syrian border crossings. A total of 13,179 returnees have benefited from support measures since the beginning of 2025.

The mass return follows the events of late November 2024, when armed opposition groups launched a large-scale offensive against Syrian army positions. On 8 December, they entered Damascus, and President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia. Ahmed al-Sharaa then became the leader of Syria.
