The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused the United States of reviving practices of piracy and banditry in the Caribbean Sea through the blockade against Venezuela, and expressed hope that US President Donald Trump's pragmatic approach will help avoid further escalation. This was reported by Reuters, reports News.bg.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the situation in the region constitutes a serious violation of international norms. According to her, there is "complete lawlessness" in the Caribbean Sea, with the revival of "long-forgotten thefts of foreign property", which she described as piracy and banditry.
Zakharova stressed that Russia has consistently advocated de-escalation of tensions. She expressed hope that President Trump's "pragmatism and rationality" would create conditions for finding solutions acceptable to all parties and consistent with international law.
In his statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman also confirmed Moscow's support for the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, indicating that Russia stands behind his efforts to protect the country's sovereignty, national interests, and stable development.
