Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign policy adviser has held talks with members of the US administration after Moscow received proposals from the US for a potential peace agreement for Ukraine, Reuters reports, citing a Kremlin official, BTA reports.
Yuri Ushakov has held telephone contacts with several representatives of US President Donald Trump's administration, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, without specifying the exact date of the conversation.
Putin's special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, has brought paper copies of the US peace proposals to Moscow after the meeting in Miami over the weekend. The details are being analyzed by the Kremlin, Peskov said. "The information was reviewed and on behalf of President Putin, contact was established between the Russian and US administrations," he added, stressing that it was agreed to continue the dialogue.
The Ukrainian peace talks were discussed "in general terms", but no further details were provided, Reuters noted. Dmitriev had earlier briefed Putin on his talks with US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner over the weekend in Florida, DPA reported.
Peskov did not specify how the Russian leadership perceived the peace proposals, but confirmed that Putin had outlined his demands for Kiev during a meeting with Russian business leaders, Kommersant reported. According to the publication, the Russian president reiterated Moscow's long-standing claims to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which are not yet under Russian control.
The cities of Kramatorsk, Kostyantynivka and Slavyansk, which are of strategic importance for Ukrainian defense, were not discussed. Kiev has already refused to hand them over, the agency notes. In return, Putin offered negotiations on the withdrawal of Russian troops from other Ukrainian territories.
The report also states that the United States has offered to jointly manage the Russian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, with the aim of using some of the energy produced for bitcoin mining. Ukraine hopes to regain control of Europe's largest nuclear power plant and run it jointly with the United States.
