British PM: I don't believe Donald Trump will attack Greenland - 1

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that a calm discussion was needed on Greenland to ensure that historic alliances could withstand the tests and challenges, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

Starmer said this after US President Donald Trump threatened allies with tariffs as part of his efforts to secure control of the island, which is now Danish territory.

Starmer said that in his opinion Trump was not considering taking military action in Greenland.

The British Prime Minister added that Britain's alliance with the United States had guaranteed security and prosperity for decades and stressed that he was determined to maintain those ties. But he said Trump's threats to impose tariffs on Britain and European allies if the US is not given the opportunity to buy Greenland were wrong. Starmer said Greenland's future should be decided solely by Denmark.

"Alliances endure because they are built on respect and partnership, not pressure", Starmer said. "That's why I have said that using tariffs against allies is completely wrong. It is not the right way to resolve disagreements in an alliance," he added.

"The right approach to this very complex issue is through calm dialogue between allies," he added.

Regarding the situation in the Middle East, the British prime minister said that Britain had signaled its readiness to participate in the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire. He specified that discussions on this issue were currently underway with London's allies.
