The pro-European majority in the European Parliament stood behind Ursula von der Leyen and the European Commission she heads.
This happened during a debate in Strasbourg in connection with the request by the far-right, "Patriots for Europe", for a no-confidence motion over the trade agreement between the EU and the South American bloc Mercosur.
The vote on the motion will be on Thursday - January 22.
On Monday, some pro-European MEPs openly criticized the agreement. But they pointed out that at a time of geopolitical instability and strained relations with the US, it is necessary to have a functioning European Commission.
Ursula von der Leyen herself was not at the debate at all, unlike the previous three no-confidence motions in July and October 2025. The members of the European Commission were also absent.
A farmers' protest is planned in Strasbourg today.
