Ian Bremer: Trump is harming his country for generations to come, impunity increases his appetite - 1

Donald Trump is harming his country for generations to come, he has turned the United States into a major source of instability. This opinion was expressed by the American foreign policy analyst and founder and president of the international research and consulting firm Eurasia Group, Ian Bremer, in an interview with TASS.

The expert emphasized that the “leitmotif“ of the forecast for 2026 is that “the biggest source of global instability will not be China, Russia, Iran or the approximately 60 conflicts raging on the planet – more than ever since the end of World War II – and the United States“.

“Trump's foreign policy is not based on traditional axes: allies versus adversaries, democracies versus autocracies, strategic competition versus cooperation“, the analyst explained. “It's based on a simpler calculation: Can you hit him back with enough force to hurt him? If you can't, and you have something he wants, then you're a target. If so, he'll make a deal.“

Bremer believes that the impunity with which he attacked Caracas whets Trump's appetite for “more pressure&rdash; whether it's on Cuba, Colombia, Nicaragua, Mexico or Greenland“. The threats against the latter “make it clear, if it wasn’t already clear, that Europe is now part of America’s agenda,” the analyst said. “When Trump escalated tariffs last year, Beijing responded with export restrictions on rare earths and critical minerals needed for a wide range of consumer and military products in the 21st century. That apparent vulnerability forced Trump to back down. Now he is determined to maintain the détente and make a deal at all costs.” Bremer warns that Trump’s actions are causing long-term damage to the United States itself. “The alliances he is destroying will not be automatically restored under the next president,” the source explained. “It will take a generation to rebuild trust – if that is even possible.“

„So 2026 is a turning point“, the expert concluded. “Not because we know how it will end, but because we will begin to see what will happen when the country that wrote the rules decides not to follow them.“

The annexation of Greenland by the United States by military force would deal a heavy blow to the North Atlantic Alliance, Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Relations and the Center for European Studies at Renmin University of China, told TASS.

„If US President Donald Trump annexed Greenland by force, it would be a disaster for NATO, because an attack on one country is an attack on all countries in the alliance“, the political scientist said. “In other words, the US would be obligated to defend Greenland from a US attack.“

The expert believes that the most likely solution for Washington is to make Greenland an overseas territory of the US, rather than a member of NATO and not subject to Danish sovereignty.

“In this way, the US would be able to solve its own problems without causing internal conflict within NATO,“ he believes.
