Enemy at Russia's gates! Pentagon deploys a detachment of American soldiers with ''Abrams'' tanks in Romania - 1

The Chief of Staff of the Romanian Defense Staff, Vlad Gheorghe, said that the US has agreed to “improve the quality and combat capabilities of the forces deployed in Romania“, reports Romania Journal, quoted by BTA.

According to the general, a detachment of American soldiers with “Abrams' tanks will be deployed in Romania.

The detachment is part of the regular US presence in Romania, deployed on a rotational basis, and does not mean an increase in the number of troops. In fact, in October, the US announced that it would reduce its military presence in Romania.

A key element of the army chief's statement was the deployment of Abrams tanks, the US Army's main battle tanks, which are considered among the most advanced in the world. Romania is currently in the process of acquiring 54 Abrams tanks.

The Romanian army chief said that he had discussed the issue with NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) during his visit to Romania and that NATO would remain committed to providing forces for the country's defense in line with regional plans.

"The United States agreed to maintain the same level of military contingent and, in addition, to improve the quality and combat capabilities of the forces deployed in Romania. The best example is the one that SACEUR also mentioned during his visit to Romania: a detachment of American soldiers equipped with "Abrams'' tanks will be deployed in Romania in the near future," added General Gheorghe Vlad.

In October, the United States announced that it would reduce its military presence in Romania, withdrawing a battalion from a rotational brigade assigned to NATO's southeastern flank, but leaving around 1,000 soldiers in the country.

In addition to the American troops, Romania hosts a number of European forces. The total number of American and European troops remaining in the country after Washington's decision to reduce its presence is around 3,500 soldiers.
