Russia confirms invitation to Zelensky to come to Moscow - 1

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that Russia has "confirmed its invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to come to Moscow for peace talks, but has not yet received a response", Interfax news agency reported, BTA reported.

Zelensky rejected a similar invitation last year, suggesting Russian President Vladimir Putin go to Kiev instead, Reuters recalls.

"For now, we are talking about Moscow", Peskov noted, adding that discussions about negotiations elsewhere "are inappropriate", TASS reports.

Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said today that the question of "who gets what from the territory" is not the only one standing in the way of a potential agreement to end the fighting in Ukraine, Reuters reported.

Russia wants Ukrainian forces to withdraw from about 20 percent of the Donetsk region that the Russian army does not control. Kiev has said it does not want to give Moscow territory that Russia did not win on the battlefield.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that active work was being done to resolve the issue during US-brokered talks.

Asked today whether he agreed that the territorial issue was the only unresolved issue, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said: "I don't think so". He did not specify other key issues that still need to be resolved.

Ushakov said on Thursday that any meeting between Putin and Zelensky should be well-prepared and results-oriented. If Zelensky is ready for such a meeting, Ushakov said, the Ukrainian leader can come to Moscow and his personal security will be guaranteed.

An anonymous US official told Axios on Saturday that Zelensky and Putin were "very close" to arranging a meeting after Washington brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi last week.
