Greenland expects concrete results from dialogue with US - 1

Greenland expects concrete results from the dialogue with the United States, the Arctic island's Prime Minister Jens-Friedrich Nielsen said during the opening of the winter session of the local parliament, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.

“A dialogue is underway and the Greenland government will work with determination to ensure that it leads to concrete results“, Nielsen said. He warned that despite President Donald Trump's exclusion of a military option, Washington continues to seek to strengthen its influence on the island, Reuters notes.

The first meeting of the Greenland working group was held on January 28 in Washington, with the participation of high-ranking representatives of the United States, Denmark and Greenland. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the next day that the talks had taken place "in a very constructive atmosphere."

Nielsen stressed that discussions with the United States should be conducted in parallel with strengthening relations with Western countries and the European Union. "We are not alone, we are protected. All EU countries support us," he said, recalling his oft-repeated statement that "Greenland cannot be bought or sold."

Denmark and Greenland categorically reject any transfer of sovereignty over the island. The dialogue with the United States began after Trump considered the possibility of imposing American control over Greenland, part of Danish territory and a member of NATO.
